Finding Balance between Natural Beauty and Everyday Function

For as long as I can remember I have had a burning interest in the visual arts. My mother was an accomplished painter and art teacher who nurtured my creative side from an early age. Throughout my childhood I intently observed my mom’s creative process and realized the same creativity existed within me. As early as high school and later in college I studied studio art and art history with a concentration in photography. It was here I experimented with different mediums and began to see the world with a critical eye.

After graduating from the College of Santa Fe, I found work in a cabinet shop where I spent the next several years learning machine skills and efficient production techniques.

In 1999 I sought out an apprenticeship through the California Contemporary Craft Association. I spent the following year working with master craftsman, David J. Marks, soaking up as much knowledge as I could. By the end of the year, I realized I had only scratched the surface of the woodworking craft. I left inspired and eager to pursue a budding career.

Today, I design and build fine furniture and custom cabinetry one project at a time ensuring thoughtful execution and the utmost attention to detail. With each project I strive to achieve a balance between the function required by civilization and the beauty inherent in nature. The result, I hope, are furnishings that are both beautiful and comfortable to live with.

As a designer and craftsman I find inspiration in the significance of tradition while striving to break new ground. I look to the Shakers for their sense of practicality and innovation, the arts and crafts style for it’s simplicity and honest use of construction. The hint of Asian influence in my work stems from my cultural heritage and an attraction to an Asian aesthetic. The simple forms, subtle lines, and honest use of materials in all of my projects echo my humble reverence for both the natural world and this enduring craft.
